Why did Anglo-American elites often foster animosity between and among people of different ethnic origins?
 
  a. They wanted to put pressure on all settlers of non-English origin to learn the English language and adoptEnglish culture quickly.
 b. They wanted to teach immigrants of non-English origin the value of defending one's own ethnic past andculture.
 c. They did not want different ethnic groups to ally with each other and possibly challenge the political andeconomic power of the elite.
 d. They wanted to prepare people of non-English origin to participate in colonial government by teaching themthe value of societal and cultural debate.
