Social exchange theory assumes that people consciously weigh the costs and benefits surrounding a relationship and this analysis helps them determine if the relationship is worth entering. The theory also suggests that we seek out relationships that benefit us and avoid those with high costs. In all, if the benefits we gain are greater than the potential costs, we are likely to feel positive about the
relationship; however, if the benefits gained (benefits minus costs) fall below a certain optimal level,
we might reconsider entering or remaining in the relationship. Importantly, the assessment of benefits
and costs varies from person to person and situation to situation. Rationale for usefulness of the theory
will vary.
