Answer: Social networking sites (e.g., Facebook), the Internet, and cell phones have made it easier to stay in touch with distant friends. However, use of the Internet can result in increases in depression and loneliness. Increasing use tends, in the long run, to decrease general life satisfaction. On the other hand, research on the use of Facebook indicates that people who used it reaped benefits of social capital, especially those with low self-esteem.
