Ans: TBP stands for TATA-binding protein. It makes up a portion of the positioning factor that allows an RNA polymerase to bind to its target site. It binds to the TATA box in the minor groove of the DNA double helix and bends it by approximately 80. This distortion of the DNA in the vicinity of the TATA box allows more efficient binding of transcription factors and RNA polymerase.
