1)  ANSWER: Early literacy refers to the child's early entrance into the world of language, which
includes words, books, poetry, and stories. It is important that children with learning
disabilities be provided with an abundant and rich literacy environment. Activities that
foster early literacy include oral language activities, activities that build concepts about
print, and activities that teach alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, lettersound
correspondence, and beginning reading vocabulary.

2)  ANSWER: Students with learning disabilities and related mild disabilities can have many different
types of language problems: lack of phonological awareness, delayed speech, disorders
of grammar or syntax, limited vocabulary, and poor understanding of oral language.
Students with learning disabilities can also have difficulty with written language,
reading, writing, and spelling.

3)  ANSWER: An increasing number of students in U.S. schools come from homes where a
language other than English is spoken in the home. These students are identified as
English-language learners. Some students also have a learning disability in addition to
their poor proficiency in English. They need instruction that treats both of these
problems, that is, methods for English-language learners and methods for their learning
disability.

4)  ANSWER: Language is a communication process. Listening and reading are receptive language
forms; talking and writing are expressive language forms. The sender of the message
must convert the idea in language symbols (speaking or writing) to send it to another
person. The receiver of the message must convert the oral or written symbols (through
listening or reading) back into the idea. Problems can occur anywhere along this
communication processin coding the idea into symbols, in the mechanics of sending
it, in decoding the message, or in translating the message into ideas.

5)  ANSWER: speechlanguage impairments

6)  ANSWER: phonological awareness

7)  ANSWER: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics

8)  ANSWER: English-language learners (ELL) use a native language other than English.
