The key symptoms of acute stress disorder are a subjective sense of numbness, detachment, and absence of emotional responsiveness; feeling as if one were in a daze; a feeling of unreality about oneself or about what is happening in one's life; and inability to recall important aspects of the trauma. Such symptoms last for a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 4 weeks, emerge within 4 weeks of the traumatic event, and are not due to the effects of a substance.
