Research has shown that the development and distribution of a code of ethics really is an effective and efficient means of encouraging ethical practices within an organization. However, managers cannot assume that just because their firms have a code of ethics all organization members will have all the guidelines needed to determine what is ethical and act accordingly. It is impossible for a firm's code of ethics to cover all ethical and unethical conduct within an organization in one code  or to address all potential ethical dilemmas a firm's employees will be faced with on a daily basis. It is important for managers to realize their codes of ethics will need to be monitored and potentially revised periodically so that they are realistic and usable guidelines.
