1. Keep the humidity level in your home between 40 and 60 percent.
2. Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
3. Be sure your home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms. If no fans, open the windows.
4. Buy paints with mold-resistant properties or add mold inhibitors.
5. In the bathroom, wipe down shower doors, keep surfaces dry, and, if necessary, use environmentally safe mold-killing products.
6. Many anti-mold products commonly used in outdoor areas are extremely toxic; pets and wildlife may wander through these after they've been applied, so use them sparingly or not at all.
7. Wash rugs used in entryways and other areas where moisture can accumulate.
8. Throw away mattresses and furniture exposed to excessive moisture.
9. Dry clothing thoroughly before putting it away.
10. When buying a house, don't skimp on mold inspections. Check for mold growth regularly, especially in rental units where landlords may not pay attention to these risks.
