How and why can they? I dont understand why the molecules of water or solute move to achieve equilibrium. Can anyone please help me.

Only isotonic solutions achieves an equilibrium. A cell wants to have balanced levels of water and solute inside and outside of the cell, so it moves its internal materials out, and lets outside materials in, to try to achieve this. Hypertonic and hypotonic solutions have more solutes inside the cell or outside the cell, respectively. Look here for more info:
