1. Axial
   • forms the central axis for the whole body and protects many of the internal organs
   • skull, vertebrae, rib cage, sternum, sacrum, coccyx, hyoid bone
2. Appendicular
   • bones of the limbs and the girdle (bones that attach the limb to the axial skeleton)
   • pectoral girdle–clavicle, scapula
   • upper extremity–humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges
   • pelvic girdle–ischium, ilium, pubis
   • lower extremity–femur, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges, patella
