The axial skeleton refers to the bones of the head and trunk.  Notable examples include the skull, vertebrate, ribs, and sternum.

The appendicular skeleton refers to the upper and lower limb, as well as the pelvic girdle.  Examples include the humerus, radius ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula.
