High unemployment results in an increase in government spending on unemployment benefits and social services. It can also bring about increases in stress, mental illness, and crime throughout a population. Low unemployment means that workers have increased buying power and spend more, which can lead to a higher inflation rate. Also, it is costly for businesses to lay off workers and then, as the economy improves eventually, hire and train new employees.
