1 -- Propranolol hydrochloride (Inderal) is a beta-blocker that prevents dilation of vessels in the pia mater and inhibits serotonin uptake. Other drugs prescribed to prevent migraines include methylsergide maleate (Sansert), topiramate (Topamax), and valproic acid (Depakote). Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is taken at the onset or during a migraine and helps some patients. Sumatriptan (Imitrex) and zolmitriptan (Zomig) are taken once the migraine starts.
