While a decrease in social acceptance is not the only reason why fewer people are smoking, it may have contributed to the other reasons, ie. Higher taxation and restrictions regarding where people can smoke. Overall, there has been a decrease in the proportion of the population who smokes. For example, from 2001 to 2011 the number of 15 to 17 year old smokers (self-reported) decreased by over 50% and the proportion of 18-19 year old smokers decreased by 14%.
