Hippodamos believed that cities should be limited to 10,000 citizens divided into three classes—artists, farmers, and soldiers—and three zones—sacred, public, and private. The basic plot (like a city block) was a square 600 feet on each side, divided into quarters, which were subdivided into six rectangular building plots.
