D
The patient with a pressure ulcer would not benefit from a cold application because it would slow blood supply and wound healing and increase risk of further tissue damage. A cold pack may be used for the patient with active bleeding because it causes vasoconstriction and would reduce bleeding. Cold therapy is appropriate for the patient with a sprain to reduce edema, inflammation, and pain. Application of cold slows bacterial growth, so this may be used for an infected wound that is warm to the touch and inflamed.
