Why is infrared much better than visible light in studying star formation?

Before the protostar begins shining, it will heat enough to glow red, but this radiation is hidden behind a shroud of dust that absorbs light, but not heat.  Thus the dark nebula often have heat sources imbedded within them that someday will crawl out of the womb and shine as stars as well.
