1. Describe the significance of emotional regulation.

Emotional regulation is part neurological and part social awareness. It is reflected in a child’s ability to monitor his or her behavior and be appropriate in social interactions. The ability to curtail the expression of negative emotions allows a child greater success in peer relations as well as in his home and school environments. Emotional regulation also aids in the child’s ability to learn.

3. Discuss Baumrind’s three styles of parenting.

Baumrind coined three types of parenting: authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. These categories were based on four dimensions that influence parenting. These four include expression of warmth or nurturance, strategies for discipline, quality of communication, and expectations for maturity.
