Cultural competence requires health care providers to see themselves as becoming culturally competent rather than already being culturally competent. This view necessitates that the provider continuously strive to work effectively within the cultural context of the patient. The meaning of eye contact varies from one culture to another. The patient may not desire assimilation and conformity. Reading can be helpful but does not provide all knowledge. Self-examination should move the nurse toward providing more competent, humanistic care.
