Two ways of seeing a river

1. Account for the fact that, to Mark Twain the river captain, "all the grace, the beauty, the poetry, had gone out of the majestic river."
2. How did Twain's perception of the river change?
3. In your own words, state the main idea of this essay
4. Where in the essay does Twain make use of concrete/descriptive detail
5. Where does Twain make use of objective description, that is, description that is technical, even scientific? Where does he use subjective description, description that conveys personal scientific? Where does he use subject description, description that conveys personal impressions? What dominant impression does he manage to convey with each description?
6. Discuss the organization of detail in Twain's two descriptions. Is the organization of detail random, or is there a pattern to it?
7. What pattern of organizing this contrast does Twain use: continuous or alternating? Explain what would be gained or lost by emptying the other method.
8. What is the function of paragraph three? Would the essay be as effective without it? Why, in this paragraph, does Twain refer to his pity for doctors? How has he become like a doctor?
