Oxygen in a water molecule is highly electronegative and hydrogen has sufficient positive charge on it.One atom of oxygen combines with two hydrogen atoms using its lone pairs forming a coordinate covalent bond. This bond formed between hydrogen and highly electronegative oxygen is a very strong bond and is called hydrogen bond. Thus a lot of heat is required to break this type of bond.
