For many crops, such as apples, peppers, tomatoes, and melons, pollinators are needed to transfer pollen grains from one plant to another. Without this crucial step, these crops would not be able to develop fruit. Plants are pollinated by a wide variety of insects, such as bees and butterflies, and sometimes by birds and bats. Pollinators are threatened by habitat loss as their native ecosystems have been replaced with monoculture fields. Their populations have also declined because of the widespread use of insecticides on agricultural fields. The use of insecticides on crops requiring pollinators can in fact decrease crop yield.
