Boot camps provide traditional correctional elements such as discipline, physical exercise, physical labor, specialized education and training, and counseling. In this way, and for some offenders (such as young people who have been poorly educated, have few jobs skills, lack strong role models and good discipline, and have generally been misguided in life), a boot camp is the perfect place. Their negative behaviors will cease, never to return. However, for other offenders, they can be ineffective, or even cause an increase in criminal behavior. Furthermore, boot camps throw delinquent and criminal offenders together, thereby linking up lower-risk individuals with higher-risk individuals. This can result in lower-risk offenders learning more risky behavior. Boot camps can also model aggressive behavior and negatively impact self-esteem.
