The expansion of water (in this case ocean water) as it warms is an important factor, since surface ocean waters have warmed during the past 50 years. Also, the warming of the atmosphere has led to the melting of continental ice sheets and alpine glaciers, the water from which would run off into rivers that feed into oceans, increasing the amount of water in ocean basins and causing the sea level to rise.
