Chemicals used clean up oil spills, such as dispersants that break up oil slicks on the surface, can be very harmful to living things- including the organisms that would metabolize the oil naturally. This tells us that cleaning a spill involves trade-offs. The best way to deal with oil spills is to prevent them.
