Without progesterone or estrogen to maintain it, the endometrium enters the ischemic (blood-starved) phase and disintegrates; this is referred to as the ischemic or menstrual phase. Drops in estrogen and progesterone levels are not associated with the proliferative, luteral, or re-covery phases of the menstrual cycle.
