Everywhere I look people tell me that there is no polynomial time algorithm for factoring an integer into its primes.  Why do they say this? Doesn't trial division on an integer n run in O(n^(1/2))?? That is certainly polynomial time.

Hey, I don't think you're going to need this formula during your shift at McDonald's so don't worry about it.
