When might it be better to solve a quadratic equation by factoring the polynomial without first
putting it in standard form?

Not too sure. Perfect square form? or is that even a form?

I would say that you would generally want to put in in standard form: ax2+bx+ c, first no matter what the situation. It would make factoring easier and defines the constants a,b,&c for the quadratic equation.
