Part 1.

The formula has a sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) in it. If b^2 - 4ac isn't a perfect square, then that square root is going to be an irrational number and you can't solve the problem by factoring.

Part 2. Write it down and calculate b^2 - 4ac.
