Symbiosis is the intimate living together of two dissimilar organisms in a mutually beneficial relationship. Based on that definition, there are no symbiotic relationships between these marine mammals and other species. Among a pod (group) of the same species, they exhibit a complex hierarchy and will each take on specific tasks for the greater good of the pod. These dolphins spend their life cruising open waters, eating fish and mating. They do not provide any symbiotic relationship to other species. You might argue that a pod of dolphins feeding may benefit some marine birds due to the fact they bring fish up to the surface, but that is a one way street, the birds do little for the dolphins.

I would have to disagree Bio_man because dolphins are extremely social animals who have been documented displaying extraordinarily selfless behaviors. Earlier this year, a mother pygmy whale and her calf stranded off the coast of New Zealand. Despite rescue efforts, these disoriented animals stranded an additional four times. Were it not for a highly social wild bottlenose dolphin, rescuers would most likely have euthanized the whales. To everyone’s surprise, this bottlenose dolphin led the whales 200 yards out to the open sea, where they swam off.

I suppose you could fish sustainably.

You can reduce demand for fish and other seafood that is caught using harmful unsustainable practices by becoming an informed consumer and purchasing only sustainably caught seafood.

You can educate your friends, local businesses (restaurant and grocery store owners, etc.) regarding seafood consumption.

You can stop eating swordfish, fresh tuna and shark. In addition to reducing the high level of bycatch associated with the catching of these species you will be reducing your intake of the high levels of toxic methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin which can severely damage developing fetuses and children.

Prevents overfishing: Different fish and shellfish have different roles in their ecosystem. Some are predators, others are herbivores, etc. Overfishing for food or the aquarium trade of certain kinds of animals can upset the balance in the food web.

Minimizes habitat degradation: This is a big problem along coastlines of the world since this is where most of the world's population lives. Reducing waste and pollution and managing the way these areas are used help prevent changes in the marine environment that can kill and damage entire ecosystems. For example, building a lot near an estuary can result in increased erosion and input of pollutants. These substances cloud up the water and make it touch for organisms that rely on sunlight (like coral reefs, kelp forests, sea grass beds) or filter-feeders (like oysters, mussels) to live.
