Parkinson’s disease is caused by degeneration of dopamine-secreting fibers that project from the substantia nigra to the neostriatum (caudate nucleus and the putamen). Parkinson’s disease is characterized by slowness of movement and muscle rigidity. The slowness of movement is thought to occur because dopamine input to the caudate nucleus facilitates movements; loss of dopamine input slows movements. The treatment of Parkinson’s disease would involve facilitation of dopamine function in brain.
