Treatment of some cancers, such as lymphomas, can result in such rapid destruction of cancer cells that massive amounts of intracellular contents are released into the blood. One of the intracellular contents is phosphorus. This rapid destruction of cancer cells causing hyperphosphatemia is called tumor lysis syndrome.
