D
Treatment for uncomplicated rib fractures is nonspecific because the fractured ribs unite spontaneously. Movement of the ribs during inhalation (and on exhalation, to some extent) increases the pain. Clients may breathe so shallow to reduce the pain that their breathing pattern becomes ineffective secondary to compensation for the pain. The primary consideration is to decrease pain so that adequate ventilatory status is maintained.
