Generally speaking, species diversity increases with increasing environmental complexity. However, the impact of variation in different aspects of the environment will influence different species in different ways (some types of variation may cause increases in diversity, some decreases). Therefore, a basic understanding of species’ niches (their relationship to their environment) is necessary for appropriate interpretations.
