The evolution of eukaryotic cells most likely occurred in many steps. Outline the steps that may have occurred beginning with the formation of biological molecules and ending in complex structures observed in eukaryotic cells today.

Answer: Answers should include phases or steps such as (1) abiotic synthesis of organic molecules under hot, reducing conditions; (2) polymerization of organic molecules into nucleic acids and proteins (students could also include that RNA may have been the first informational molecule and biological catalyst); (3) encapsulation of organic polymers in a simple membrane; (4) endosymbiosis of smaller cells (bacteria) inside a larger nucleated cell to form membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts.
