Your patient with chronic renal failure is ready to begin renal dialysis treatment. She asks you for advice about which type of dialysis would be right for her. She states that she is considering peritoneal dialysis because it is less expensive and has fewer dietary and fluid restrictions. You advise her that peritoneal dialysis:
1.   has some very real drawbacks, such as increased risk of peritonitis and back pain from the indwelling fluid.
2.   gives more independence and more closely resembles normal kidney function.
3.   is a lot more work than hemodialysis, in which the health care staff takes care of everything.
4.   usually does not work very well and has many complications, such as a high blood sugar level.

The patient has considered the alternatives and has researched the procedures. A positive response will help her seek more information about the procedures.

I agree. Answer #2. Peritoneal and Hemodialysis both have complications. Answer #2 is less subjective and allows you to present objective information regarding the benefits of Peritoneal dialysis.
