First, the injured vessel constricts. Next, the platelets form a plug to seal the leak. Then the injured tissue and platelets release clotting factors. Clotting factors convert an inactive blood protein to prothrombin activator, which in turn, converts prothrombin to thrombin. Then thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin. The last step involves the fibrin fibers forming a network to trap red blood cells and platelets, causing a clot to form.
