Odor molecules dissolve in the mucous of the nasal cavities and bind to the hairs on the olfactory receptors found in these passages. Once the threshold is reached, the message is sent to the olfactory bulbs of the brain. The olfactory bulbs transmit the message to the limbic system, which is also associated with emotion and memory. Many odors are associated with memories, whether positive or negative.
