Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is an important biochemical marker for pregnancy and so the basis for many tests. A maternity nurse should be aware that:

  1. hCG can be detected as early as 2 weeks after conception.
  2. the level of hCG increases gradually and uniformly through pregnancy.
  3. much lower than normal increases in the level of hCG may indicate a postdate pregnancy.
  4. higher than normal levels of hCG may indicate ectopic pregnancy or Down syn-drome.
