Concerning lab tests and diagnostic tests in the hospital after birth, nurses should be aware that:

  1. all states test for phenylketonuria (PKU), hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell disease.
  2. federal law prohibits newborn genetic testing without parental consent.
  3. if genetic screening was done before the infant was 24 hours old, it should be re-peated at age 1 to 2 weeks.
  4. hearing screening is now mandated by federal law.

1. Incorrect. All states test for PKU and hypothyroidism, but other genetic defects are not universally covered.
2. Incorrect. Federal law mandates newborn genetic screening, but not screening for hearing problems (though more than half the states do).
3. Correct. If done very early, genetic screening should be repeated.
4. Incorrect. Federal law mandates newborn genetic screening, but not screening for hearing problems (though more than half the states do).
