Salt marsh plants have adaptations similar to those of desert plants for reducing water loss or excessive salty conditions. These include having cuticle-covered leaves to prevent water loss, having extensive vascular tissue for efficient water transport, and having thick leaves for water retention. Mangroves also have specific adaptations such as having openings (stoma) only on the underside of leaves and having the ability to concentrate salts in certain leaves that are eventually discarded.
