Noh was developed for elite audiences, and as such, it is a highly ritualistic and stylized form that uses poetic language, recurring images, word play, and literary and historical allusions. Kabuki is an exuberant form that catered to a popular audience and therefore put a premium on entertainment, using extraordinary costumes and makeup, lavish sets, and scenic devices, and emphasizing the virtuosity of its performers.
