After 1000 development of university led to intellectual innovation; Peter Abelard introduced use of logic to consider doctrinal issues; resistance from those like Bernard of Clairvaux who favored mysticism over rationalism (similar to tensions in Islam); introduction of classical authors during 12th century led to greater synthesis of rationalism and theology; greatest synthesis achieved by Thomas of Aquinas (Summa); after 13th century scholasticism deteriorated.
