NASW's position on social workers providing services to Substance Use Disorders is:
 
  a) For social workers serving this population to enroll SUD individuals in mandatory local or state
  detox programs and work to council individuals and their family members.
  b) Avocate when appropriate for the needs, decisions, and rights of clients, and promote
  collaboration among service providers
  c) To seek to educate the general population on Substance Use Disorders and the indivuals affected
  and work to overcome the stigmas associated with SUDs.
  d) Leave the treatment of indivuals struggling with SUDs to medical doctors and council family
  members when appropriate.
