If Avitene has been used for hemostasis during a surgical procedure, the blood collected from the wound cannot be used for autotransfusion.

Blood is not salvaged if Avitene has been used for hemostasis. The Avitene may not wash out when red blood cells are processed, and it may predispose the patient to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or a respiratory complication.
