The British plan in 1776 aimed to capture New York City as a forward base. They intended to move one force north while another force from Canada moved south. The goal was to meet near Albany in 1777, cutting off New England from the rest of the colonies and strangling the rebellion. However, execution flaws, defeats at Saratoga and Germantown, and the entry of France and Spain into the conflict ultimately doomed this strategy.
