Crown gall disease in plants comes from exposure to the soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. How is it that the tumors characteristic of the disease can persist when the bacteria are no longer found in the plant?

Ans: The disease-causing ability is actually carried by the Ti (tumor inducing) plasmid, which is transferred from bacterial cells into plant cells and remains to perpetuate tumors.
