Ans: The supercoiled bacterial chromosome has several hundred domains, each of which is a loop of DNA with a length of 10 to 40 kb and is secured at its base. The supercoiling within a domain may be either constrained (due to protein interactions) or unconstrained (a result of tension in free DNA); empirical evidence suggests that it is primarily unconstrained.
