Mendel's Law of Segregation is illustrated in meiosis I when homologs separate. Alternate alleles of a gene found on homologs segregate from each other and end up in separate gametes. Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment is illustrated by the behavior of two pairs of homologs during metaphase I. The alignment of one homologous pair is independent of the alignment of other pairs.
