Based on DNA sequences of single genes, genomic analysis has confirmed that prokaryotes are divided into two great lineages: the Bacteria and the Archaea. The latter may be more closely related to the Eukarya.

Sequence divergence between archaeans and bacteria is considerable, and despite the general morphological similarity of these groups, the Archaea more closely resemble the Eukarya in terms of both the details of DNA replication and the expression (and, in some cases, the structure) of their genes.
